A Little Ottsville Group History

The Ottsville Group was founded in November 1978 by six A.A. members: Ruth B., Richard M., Lynn E., Rick B., Joan H., and John.

At the time, there were no A.A. meetings in the immediate area. Members seeking fellowship had to travel to Doylestown, so these six members decided to establish a meeting closer to home.

The first few meetings were held in the home of founding member Rich M. Soon afterward, the group moved to St. Luke’s Church on Durham Road, where its Saturday evening speaker/discussion meeting became a lasting tradition.

Originally part of District 23, the Ottsville Group became part of District 47 at the end of 1983.

Like many A.A. groups, Ottsville experienced its share of challenges. Attendance was sometimes as low as three or four regular members, and during the early 1980s the group came close to closing. But the members continued showing up and keeping the meeting going.

The group’s history also remembers Rich M., one of its founders, who traveled as far as Philadelphia and Allentown to spread the word about the new Ottsville meeting and encourage others to attend.

A Tradition of Keeping the Doors Open

That dedication continued many years later during the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the group’s December 2021 history report, Ottsville was able to continue holding in-person meetings with the cooperation of the church. Although attendance was small, members continued gathering and maintaining the fellowship.

It’s one more chapter in the story of a group that has weathered changing times while continuing to carry the message.

Join the Celebration

From a handful of members meeting in a private home in 1978 to 48 years of fellowship in Ottsville, the group has remained a place where alcoholics can share their experience, strength, and hope.

Whether you’ve been attending Ottsville for decades, are new to the group, or are visiting from another meeting, we hope you’ll join us for this special celebration.

Bring a covered dish or dessert, bring a friend, and help us celebrate 48 years of recovery!
